Conditions were about as good as they could get in Vermont for Sunday night's halfpipe final in Mt. Snow, VT. The storm that passed through during the night left about 8 inches of fresh powder which got the park crew up early getting the pipe ready for the nighttime showdown.
As the sun began to set over the barren woods of Vermont, the pipe light up and the show had begun! The skies were clear, the air was cold and the pipe was fast making for a contest that was one of the best all year.
Shaun dropped in the "2nd to last" position, so he got a good look at the rest of the field and they were not going to give it up easy. Kevin Pearce, Danny Davis all threw down solid runs stacking up scores in to the 90s. Shaun knew that he had to step it up but as he was finishing his last hit of his first run, he came down a little to low and his legs just gave out.
He scored well and was sitting in fourth place going into his final run. As the rest of the field took their drops, Shaun was silently at the drop-in, just waiting for redemption. It was almost as if the tension building amped him up, because as he dropped into his last run the crowd was screaming!
Blasting out a huge backside rodeo on his first hit, Shaun had the look of authority and that he really wanted this run. Next was a huge backside 900 and then he combo'd that into back to back 1080s and then into a HUGE frontside 720 Japan and capped it off with a switch backside rodeo at the bottom.
As he landed his last trick, the crowd went wild! He knew that he had the victory and he earned it. Tossing down a creative run, huge air and good combinations of spins, Shaun topped the podium with a score of a 96!
This was Shaun's first halfpipe win for the year, reversing his finishes from the first Dew Tour, landing himself a 2nd in Slopestyle and 1st in Superpipe. This victory puts him in the lead for the race for the tour title with only one more stop left at Northstar on Feb. 20-22, 2009.
